two things to try...

1. Is the hold switch on? The hold switch can be turned on by mistake... check it has a white scetion showing, not orange.

2. Try resseting the Ipod... Pressing the middle key on its own will not work... you need to press the middle bitton AND the play button at the same time, then hold both down until the screen goes blank and the Apple logo appears.
