Default Apple AirPort Extreme Setup Problems!?

I live in Plymouth and have been using a Belkin Wireless G Router for the last 7-8 years and it has been awful!!! I can't fully watch youtube video's without it stop completely, sometimes I try to load a page and it will just freeze and Ill have to wait about 10 minutes for the refresh button to work. Lots of the time I will disconnect my router and plug the the DSL directly into my MacBook and it will run perfectly without any problem what so ever. I have done a fair bit of research on routers and what the difference between 802.11's and I now know the 802.11g is not a great format. I have even been told that I need to upgrade my router to a 802.11n so I have been looking around to find the best suited router for me and because I have an iPad, MacBook Pro and an iPhone I thought it was a no brainer and I bought myself a Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station today, however, yesterday I was trying to connect to the internet and order a AirPort but my network was not allowing my to browse which was very strange. So I switched off my old Belkin router and modem and I was still getting the same problem in the end I thought it wasn't worth getting worked up about so I went into town and got myself a AirPort. Once I got home I unplugged my Belkin and plugged in my Apple AirPort as I was setting it up using AirPort Utility, I got 2 ''problems'' after trying to ''replace'' my existing router, first problem I was able to sort out but the second is.....
''Problem 2 of 2: Internet Connection

Your Apple Wi-Fi base station does not have a valid IP address. Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is connected to your broadband modem or local network, verify your settings, and try again. If you still can't connect, contact your Internet service provider.''

I can't figure out whats gone wrong or how to fix it! I have never had this problem before. Someone please help.
