Default Wireless internet for Macs?

Does the airport/ wireless internet connection device need to be manufactured by Apple?
I don't even know if there are any other devices like AirPort.

I am assuming that Qwest has given you a DSL router and you just need something wireless to plug into it. Apple makes their Airport Extreme, a bit pricey but it is the latest "n" type and has great range and is very fast. But Linksys should work. All you need to do is plug it in to your DSL router, you don't need the CD. Just type in 192.168.1.1 on Safari and it will access the Linksys wireless router and you can follow the on line directions on how to set it up.
