Default iMac "target mode" problem?

i have a 20 in iMac (model# A1224) that started to fail. (specifically, it would get to the login screen, i would enter the password and it would freeze) i did alot of research and found the best solution is to reinstall the OS. well before i do that i need to get all the files off.

i have booted it in target mode, and have it hooked to another iMac (17in model# A1173) via firewire. it will mount (icon on the desktop) but when i double click the 20in HD icon, i get the pinwheel for 1/2 hour-2+ hours. sometimes when a window does open, there will be nothing, sometimes the files will pop up, but when i click them i get the pinwheel again.

i believe the HD is failing, and i have a SATA to USB converter ive used in the past when it comes to it, but i dont really want to take this thing apart.

any ideas? point me in the direction of a helpful website?
