Default make screen (safari) bigger on macbook pro !?!? ( i dont need to zoom )?

Im ready to lose my mind with my macbook pro. I've had it for a week, and still cannot figure out how to make the safari window (or any for that matter bigger) ... if I click the green + sign at the top left it just moves the window to the side or makes it slightly bigger but not my whole screen. I can't click the side of the window and have little sideways arrows appear to widen the screen. There's nothing in the "window" tab on the menu bar ? I've searched in my help section for this too .... !!!??? Is this as big as the screen gets? Like it has about 2 inches on each side of the window that just show the desktop in behind. PLEASE HELP !
thank you ! omg. . . . how would i have known that !? hahaha
