Default My MacBook Pro can access internet but not the local servers?

Using an ethernet connection to the University's network (by plugging a lan cable to a wall plug or something) and a proxy server to connect to the internet. When I checked by using a friend's laptop running on Windows 7, he can access the server. For example, from his laptop, you just open a web browser and input the server name (e.g : http://pacat/) and click go. Then, you have accessed it.

Using the same proxy settings, I tried to do the same with my Mac and an error pops up, saying "the website cannot be found ". Pls help. Do I need to do some settings first or something ?
