Default Lost photos when updating iPhone to IOS 5?

when i updated my iPhone 4 to ios 5 it warned me that it had to wipe all media in order to download so i canceled that and synced it to my laptop so that it backed-up. after the sync was done i allowed it to update. when it was done the only thing it restored was my apps and music. i lost my contacts, photos, call history, preference settings, etc. it did not ask me if i would like to restore it to an older back-up, it automatically set it up as a new iPhone. i then connected my phone to my desktop, which had a back-up from august, and restored it to that. i got almost everything important back, but i took some very precious photos in December that seem to have completely disappeared. i downloaded a program call iExplorer because many people said that recovered their photos, but there is a time gap from august to Jan.8 in that program as well. is there any other place that the photos may have been put or a way to restore them? plz help, i need these photos back
