Default how to upgrade from mac os 9 to say.....10.1 or higher?

I have an old mac which was given to me with mac os 9.0 already installed. I didn't receive the instalation cd but was wondering how (if possible) could i upgrade to higher or newer version. something that would be more compatible with most of the softwares i'm trying to run. If it is possible i would GREATLY appreciate some help on how to do it. If not.....then well of to ebay we go

unless you buy a new mac you won't get a free download or cd/dvd of 10.x.

You can buy its dvd from apple's website, but then it might be cheaper to get it on ebay as you already mentioned. make it is a legally licensed copy though.

On amazon.com it is for $109.99

you will get a DVD so it is matter of inserting it, power on the laptop and follow the instructions.
