Default Ipod nano (3rd) shows up as unknown device! please read the rest!!!?

ok...
ipod nano 3rd generation 4gb
i have always been able to plug in the usb cable with my ipod on the other end and itunes automatically pops up...
now whenever i try this computer, itunes doesnt pop up
my computer knows that something is connected to the usb drive but this small window pops up and is has a list of all the ports for the computer but the one which i plug into is the one that says "unknown device."
-ive tried both usb ports
-ipod is charged fully
-it works on my other computer but thats not where my music is!!!
-and i think the problem might be in the cable but ppl are suggesting i use that disc that comes with a new ipod to uninstall it and reinstall it but i cant find that
-ive already tried reinstalling itunes and the problem isnt there.
-so its either the ipod or the computer usb drive or most possibly the cable/
but just tell me what i need to do like go to the apple store??
do i have to pay them??
just tell me?!?!?

I'm baffled...maybe your format isn't right, but thats mostly if your going from PC to Mac. I would just call ipod service the number is: 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273)

Hope this helps!

If not hope you figure it out! : )
