Default MAC USERS HELP Mac error: "you need to restart your computer. Hold Down the Power...

...button...."? So my mac has been acting like a B%^& lately and so i've been trying to reinstall the operating system, however I misplaced my original discs long ago, so a friend gave me a burned copy ( i do not support pirated software) and i insert it and snow leopard sees that its "Mac OS X snow leopard install" however when I restart it as the Bootable disc or when i hold 'c' at startup to make it boot off the disc it hangs for about 1 min then goes to a gray screen that says "ou need to restart your computer. Hold Down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button" along with a bunch of different languages. I tried using an old hard drive i took out of my 17" mac, that i replaced with a larger one, and i get the same screen. Would this problem be because of a bad OS disc and if so i will go buy one, but i dont want to buy one if it wont fix my problem, please help, thanks guys.
