Default How do you make a video on a Mac?

I've been trying to make a video using clips from a couple DVDs (like the fan videos you see on youtube) and some pictures. I worked on trying to figure out which programs I need and how to do if for hours the other day and I feel like I have gotten no where. Can anyone help me out and let me know what I need? I have a Mac and thought I could figure it out. I'm usually pretty good at figuring this stuff out on my own, but...ugh...this is driving me crazy.
What I'm trying to do specifically, is take some small clips from a movie and put them in with some pictures. I have MacTheRipper and already ripped the DVD. I'm using iMovie as well. I guess what I need help with is how to get the movie into iMovie and edit it so I only have the small clips that I want.
I have it imported into iMovie but I don't know how to edit out the clips that I want. I whole clip is like 10 minutes long, but I just want a few seconds here and there from it to go along with the pictures I have.

i know a pretty good mac dvd ripping program that best suits you. you can try it for your choice. it can help you get short clips from the DVD with the help of its movie length trimming function. it also offers snapshot function so that you won't miss any pictures of the DVD movie. therefore, you can edit the DVD with iMovie as you like.
here i'd like to share the program with you http://www.mac-dvd-ripper.com/mac-dvd-ripper.html

Sometimes you can force a Mac application to open something it is not meant to. Try taking the icon of the movie you want and "dropping" it on the iMovie icon. This should force it to open in iMovie and then it should be editable. I haven't tried this for myself, but most Mac programs will work that way.
If that doesn't work try the Import action in iMovie.
If neither of these work, I have no idea.
When you double click on the movie you ripped, what program opens the file? Is it iDVD? If so, see if you can copy the parts you want and paste them into an open iMovie.
Good Luck.
