Default hard drive faliure -- now itunes completely not working: help?

righht so my hard drive on my dell laptop recently failed and had to be replaced. thankfully i managed to backup all of my documents, pictures and videos from my laptop but everything else went. So when my hard drive was replaced i basically had to replace everything again.

i thought everything was fine as i managed to save most things important; but then i have just recently opened itunes (after downloading it) and plugged in my iPod.

it recognised that my iPod had things on it; but now it has no recollection of anything that i purchased through itunes itself or just put on from cd's and things.

so.. i have checked the itunes support website and found that you are 'supposed' to back up all of your files from itunes just incase something like this happened.

but the weird thing is everything is still on my iPod even though i tried to sync it to itunes.

so really my question's are:

1) is there any way to get any of my music back?

2) if i download some new songs onto itunes and then sync my ipod will it then get rid of everything that was on it before? and thus only have say the 1 album i literally just downloaded?

because if that's the case.. i'm kinda screwed :L because then i will never be able to add music again!

any help would be appreciated; thank you! and sorry for such a long explanation too!
