I thought I had to drag the songs to my ipod, but when I did that it didn't work. Help! Can someone break it down for me? I'm new at this.

Open up itunes with your ipod plugged in.
Click file and select add file to library, locate your music from where it is saved. Select it and ok it. The music should now appear in your itunes library.
Sync your ipod and wait until itunes displays "ok to disconnect" disconnect and the songs should be on your ipod.
