Default are there many viruses that target the mac OSX operating system?

I just suffered a major computer crash from a virus and im using a PC windows vista. I had to totally wipe everything and reinstall the operating system

So im considering switching to the Mac but i wont if it isnt any more secure

IM told its more secure simply because there arent many viruses that target the mac. Is that true and could that change
hey im not inept. I am a programer and know my way around operating systems and programs. BUt my anti virus sucks and i had norton. but it sucks. actually i think it was some rootkit from someone i pissed off. it got in the kernal which basicly ment that it was the operating system then.

The Macs are quite safer than PC when it comes to virus attack. However, one cannot deny the fact that Macs have been intruded by Trojan horse and malwares. You must have listen about the latest malwares Tsunami and Devilrobber that played foul game for Mac OSX. And, if you are a frequent torrent downloader then you must protect your Mac either through its in-built functionality which is -

Goto->system preference>security & privacy->general, click on the check-box which says "Automatically update safe download lists.

Or second option is to change your anti-virus software.
Mac Fact – They are much safer than other computers when it comes to viruses but even they are not 100% safe and secure.
