You do need to upgrade to 10.6.6 at least to get access to the App Store. Once you get to the App Store you have to download OS X 10.7 "Lion". That is roughly a 4 GB download so you better have a very reliable broadband connection. Fortunately, OS X 10.6 is still available for $29. I upgraded to Lion, but soon reverted back to Snow Leopard as I didn't feel comfortable working with Lion.
Lion requires Snow Leopard to be installed on the system. Install Snow Leopard and you will get the Macs App store. To get Lion on your system you require Mac App store.
